    Examples

    Salary to hourly

    A job pays $58,500 a year for 40 hours a week. That’s $58,500 ÷ 2,080 hours = $28.13 an hour, a biweekly paycheck of $2,250.00 or $4,875.00 a month.

    Hourly to yearly, part time

    A part-time job pays $19.50 an hour for 25 hours a week, with 2 unpaid weeks a year. 25 × 50 weeks = 1,250 hours, so the year comes to $24,375.

    How the conversion works

hourly rate = yearly pay ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year)

A full-time year is normally counted as 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours, which gives a handy shortcut: halve the salary and drop the thousands. $50,000 a year is roughly $25 an hour. Pay periods divide the year evenly: 52 weekly, 26 biweekly, 24 semimonthly or 12 monthly paychecks.

Leave weeks per year at 52 if your holidays and vacation are paid. To see what you earn for the hours you actually work, enter your paid days off: with 25 days off, a $52,000 salary is $27.66 for each hour worked (52,000 ÷ 1,880), not $25.00.

For hourly pay, regular overtime hours can be added; they’re paid at 1.5× and included in every period. All figures are before tax.

    Teachers and other school-year jobs

If you work the school year and have the summer off, tick School-year job under Work schedule and enter your contract days (about 185 is typical for U.S. teachers). The hourly and daily rates are then based on the days you actually work, and you can choose whether your salary is paid over 12 months or 10.

A $60,000 salary for 185 days of 8 hours works out to $40.54 an hour worked, against $28.85 if it were spread over a 52-week year. Paid over 12 months that’s $5,000 a month, with $10,000 of it covering July and August; paid over 10 months it’s $6,000 a month and nothing in the summer.

    Frequently asked questions

How much is $50,000 a year per hour?
$24.04 an hour at 40 hours a week, or $25.64 at 37.5 hours.
How much is $20 an hour per year?
$41,600 at 40 hours a week: $3,466.67 a month or $1,600 every two weeks, before tax.
What’s the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?
Biweekly is every two weeks, 26 paychecks a year. Semimonthly is twice a month, usually the 15th and the last day, so 24 slightly larger paychecks.
What is a teacher’s hourly rate?
Divide the yearly salary by the hours in the contract year, not by 2,080. $60,000 for 185 days of 8 hours is $60,000 ÷ 1,480 = $40.54 an hour. Tick School-year job to work it out for your own contract.
How do I convert a monthly salary to hourly?
    Multiply by 12, then divide by your hours in a year. $4,000 a month is $48,000 a year, and $48,000 ÷ 2,080 = $23.08 an hour.
